27.11.09    Wilks: Champion of Scotland

An elated Guy Wilks claimed a maiden IRC win in the Rally of Scotland, in his very first drive for Skoda UK.

Wilks was promoted from second to first place following Peugeot and Kris Meeke's disqualification, due to the Peugeot 207 having an illegal front subframe, which was judged to be 150 grams too light.

Wilks and Meeke locked horns right from the off, both pulling away from the pack to make it an unquestionable two-horse race. Meeke, who has the advantage of season-long experience in his Peugeot, just about kept Wilks at bay throughout the event. However Wilks kept snapping at his heels, refusing to give up the chance of victory in his Skoda Fabia Super 2000.

Originally the rally finished with Meeke, the 2009 IRC Champion, 20.7 seconds in front of Wilks after an accident in the final stage brought the event to a premature halt. But Guy's persistence and desire to finish as high up as possible has paid off and he will now go down in the history books as the IRC Rally of Scotland Champion.

With the 2009 IRC campaign ending on a high note, Wilks and his team can start detailed preparations for next year in a bid to take the coveted championship title from Meeke.

Evolution would like to congratulate Guy and his co-driver Phil Pugh on their achievement in Scotland, and hope it is the sign of more to come from the two-times British Rally Champion.
