The IRC rolls into town on the Italian Riviera this Thursday and battle will commence in one of the most evocative events in Motorsport history, the Sanremo rally.
From 1973 to 2003 this spectacular setting was the backdrop for many exciting Word Rally Championship battles, most memorably between Lancia, Peugeot & Austin Rover in the final days of the unrestricted Group B rally World Championship.
The golden era of the event also saw the likes of the legendary Audi Quattro, Lancia Delta Integrale and Subaru Impreza doing battle through the Sanremo Mountain passes. Fortune has always favoured the brave and of course the very quick; past winners include Colin McRae, Didier Auriol and Tommi Makinen to name a few.
The IRC has now brought the Sanremo rally back to the forefront of Motorsport and aims to recapture the sense of excitement and amazement that it once provided.
Evolution are pleased to announce that during the event two time British rally champion Guy Wilks and his co driver, will be sporting some new headgear in the form of the all new 'Evolution Motorsport' livery on their crash helmets.
The gripping rally features an unnerving 'super stage' set in complete darkness and covering 44km! The 'super stage' was introduced last year to celebrate the IRC event's 50th anniversary and has quickly become a highlight for spectators and competitors alike. Rally Sanremo is one to surely capture the imagination of all rally enthusiasts, set on the shores of the Italian Riviera, with the blazing headlights illuminating the night sky.
Of course it's not all staged in pitch black and there will be plenty of chances to clearly see Guy in his newly designed Evolution-ised helmet, most notably at the end of each stage when it's time for the customary interviews.
Wilks, who drives a Proton Satria Neo Super 2000, has been pleased with the progress the team has made this year in their debut season, especially in the last event in Spain. During in his last post rally evaluation Guy commented, "The improvements to the dampers and engine are reflected in our times compared to Madeira and that just motivates the team to work even harder before Sanremo."
Popular digital and Freeview channel Eurosport will be broadcasting exclusive and comprehensive highlights on the Rally Sanremo from 24th - 26th September '09.
