24.04.2008    Latest from Snooker World Championship.

Shaun Murphy made short work of his first round match against Dave Harold, as he cruised in to the last 16.

Murphy, who lives in Rotherham, is the local favourite and few of his supporters will have been worried as he stormed to an overwhelming 7 – 2 lead after the first session. The 2005 world champion looked in control from then on in and made impressive breaks of 102, 72 and 73 in the final three frames to take the match 10 – 3.

Murphy was wearing a pair of flashy trousers with gold strips on each leg but it was his flashes of brilliance on the table that caught the eye.

Shaun takes on world number 14, Ali Carter in the second round and will probably expect a sterner test than his first round encounter.

You can keep up to date with Murphy’s next match on BBC TV and BBC Interactive – Friday 25th April & Saturday 26th April.
